What ACEA C3 covers
ACEA C3 belongs to the ACEA C family for light-duty gasoline and diesel engines with exhaust-aftertreatment systems. The 2023 sequence describes it as a stable, stay-in-grade, mid-SAPS category intended for aftertreatment-system compatibility and, where specified by the engine manufacturer, extended drain intervals.
Mid-SAPS refers to controlled limits for sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur. Those chemical limits are relevant to emissions hardware, but the C3 label alone does not prove that an oil is correct for every catalytic-converter, gasoline-particulate-filter or diesel-particulate-filter application.
HTHS does not replace the SAE grade
The 2023 ACEA sequence sets a minimum HTHS viscosity of 3.5 mPa·s for C3. HTHS measures behavior under high-temperature, high-shear conditions and helps define the performance category.
The SAE viscosity grade remains a separate requirement. An engine may call for a C3 oil in a particular grade, and a bottle with the right grade can still fail to carry C3. Conversely, seeing C3 on a bottle does not authorize a viscosity that the manual does not list.
C3 compared with A5/B5
ACEA A5/B5 belongs to the high-SAPS A/B family and uses a published HTHS range of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa·s in the 2023 sequence. C3 belongs to the mid-SAPS C family and sets a minimum HTHS of 3.5 mPa·s. This is a real engineering distinction, not a ranking from worse to better.
Changing from A5/B5 to C3 can alter both the chemical profile and high-shear viscosity behavior. Make that change only where the vehicle manufacturer explicitly permits C3 for the exact engine and service conditions.
C3 compared with other C categories
The shared C prefix does not make C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 and C7 interchangeable. The categories differ in HTHS ranges, chemical limits, fuel-economy requirements and test packages. Some are intended around lower-viscosity applications, while C3 retains the higher minimum HTHS threshold.
Do not choose a C category by number, assume the newest number is an upgrade, or use “DPF-compatible” marketing as a replacement for the exact manual wording.
How to check a C3 requirement
