What ACEA A5/B5 covers

ACEA A5/B5 is part of the ACEA A/B family for light-duty gasoline and diesel engines. In the 2023 light-duty sequence, ACEA describes A5/B5 as a stable, stay-in-grade oil category for engines designed for lower-viscosity oils and for extended drain intervals where the engine manufacturer specifies them.

The words “where specified” matter. A5/B5 is not a general recommendation for every European engine, and it is not a shortcut for choosing a longer oil-change interval. The vehicle manufacturer decides whether the engine, market and service schedule call for this category.

HTHS and viscosity are different measurements

The 2023 ACEA sequence gives A5/B5 an HTHS viscosity range of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa·s. HTHS describes oil behavior under high temperature and high shear; it is one performance dimension inside the category.

An SAE grade such as 0W-30 or 5W-30 describes a different viscosity classification. Two bottles can carry the same SAE grade while making different ACEA claims, and two oils with different SAE grades can fall within the same ACEA category. Match both fields in the manual rather than translating one into the other.

A5/B5 compared with C3

A5/B5 belongs to the high-SAPS A/B family. ACEA C3 is a mid-SAPS C category intended around exhaust-aftertreatment compatibility and has a minimum HTHS viscosity of 3.5 mPa·s in the 2023 sequence. Those differences can matter to oil-film behavior, emissions-system compatibility and the manufacturer’s validation work.

Neither category is universally better. A C3 bottle is not an automatic upgrade from A5/B5, and an A5/B5 bottle is not a safe substitute for an engine requiring C3. The correct category is the one the exact owner’s manual or current OEM service information permits.

A5/B5 compared with A7/B7

ACEA A7/B7 uses the same published HTHS range as A5/B5 in the 2023 sequence and adds tests addressing low-speed pre-ignition, wear in turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engines, and turbocharger compressor deposits in modern direct-injection diesel engines.

That additional performance does not prove blanket backward compatibility. Category names describe oil test requirements, while vehicle approval still belongs to the manufacturer. Treat a newer-looking category as related evidence, not permission, unless OEM documentation explicitly allows it.

How to check an A5/B5 requirement

  1. Record the complete ACEA category from the manual, including any sequence-year wording.
  2. Record the allowed SAE viscosity separately.
  3. Check the bottle’s technical claims or product data sheet for ACEA A5/B5.
  4. Confirm any additional manufacturer approval listed by the manual.
  5. Use the vehicle’s normal or severe-service interval; do not infer an extended interval from A5/B5 alone.

What to follow

Use A5/B5 only for an engine whose manufacturer specifies or explicitly permits it. If the manual names another ACEA category, an OEM approval, or a market-specific alternative, that exact instruction takes priority over general category comparisons.
