API SP is the newer gasoline-engine service category and API states it can provide full protection where API SN was recommended. That category relationship does not override the viscosity grade, ILSAC branch, OEM approval or vehicle-specific wording in the owner manual.

What changed with API SP
API SP introduced requirements aimed at newer gasoline-engine concerns, including low-speed pre-ignition protection for relevant turbocharged direct-injection engines, timing-chain wear protection, and updated deposit and oxidation performance. It arrived with the ILSAC GF-6 generation, although API and ILSAC labels remain separate fields.
API SN is an earlier category. An SN bottle can still be legitimate for an application whose manual allows it, but it does not make an SP claim.
The direction of compatibility matters
API’s category guidance says SP can provide full protection where SN is recommended. That is a one-way statement: SP can cover the older API service-category requirement, while SN does not satisfy a manual that requires SP.
This answer applies to the API category only. It does not mean every SP oil is suitable for every SN-era vehicle. The bottle still needs the manual’s viscosity and any ILSAC or manufacturer specification.
What backward compatibility does not cover
Consider a manual that requires 5W-30, API SN and a specific GM, Ford or European manufacturer approval. A 0W-20 API SP oil has the newer API category but the wrong viscosity. A 5W-30 API SP oil without the required OEM approval still leaves another required field unmatched.
Backward compatibility also should not be stretched into advice for racing, aviation, two-stroke, motorcycle wet-clutch or other special applications. Their requirements can use different standards.

Climate suitability
API SP versus SN is not a climate decision. Cold-start and operating-temperature suitability come primarily from the SAE viscosity grade and the manual’s temperature chart. Pick the allowed grade first, then confirm that the oil carries the required API category and any other approval.

Use API SP where a manual requires SP. Where a manual requires SN, API officially allows SP as the newer category, provided the viscosity and all other specifications match. Never use the SP-to-SN relationship as permission to change grade or ignore an OEM approval.
