Start with the exact Honda manual
Honda oil requirements are usually expressed as a combination of fields rather than one global approval name. A manual may state an SAE viscosity, an API service category, an ILSAC standard, a certification mark, and a maintenance interval. Those fields can change with the engine, model year, region and operating conditions.
That makes a generic statement such as “all Hondas use 0W-20” unsafe. Some newer applications use lower-viscosity grades, some older engines use other grades, and market-specific manuals can differ.
Viscosity and specification remain separate
The SAE grade describes how the oil behaves across temperature tests. API and ILSAC categories describe performance tests. The bottle must meet the manual’s grade and category; one does not prove the other.
Honda manuals may also refer to an API certification symbol rather than only spelling out the category. Read the back label and compare the exact category or mark. Do not rely on a retailer selector as the only source.
Engine-specific language matters
Honda and Acura have used additional requirements in certain historical or performance applications. HTO-06, for example, is associated with some older turbocharged applications. Its existence does not make it a universal Honda standard, and its absence from a newer manual should not be “corrected” from memory.
Likewise, a newer API category can have backward-compatible use in many gasoline applications, but viscosity, certification marks, warranty wording and any Honda-specific instruction still need to match.
A reliable selection workflow
- Select the official manual by model year and model, or by VIN where available.
- Confirm the exact engine and market.
- Record viscosity and API/ILSAC requirement separately.
- Record the capacity with filter and the normal/severe maintenance schedule.
- Compare those fields with the bottle back label.
What to follow
Use the Honda owner manual as the primary source. If the manual offers multiple grades for temperature or availability, stay within those stated options. If it uses an older category and the available bottle uses a newer one, verify the category relationship and any Honda-specific wording before treating it as a replacement.
